Katharine with an A Equals Lu with no O

Another silly quiz for you. I’m not a fan of OkCupid.com, but this one particular quiz (HT: SistaSmiff) looked so interesting on Sista’s site that I had to put up with the crazy "sign in/sign up" crap (did not at all remember my password!) so I could see what the results of my own personal Classic Dames Quiz would look like. I gotta say, I’m very pleased. If I could pick one person from Hollywood’s past to emulate, it’d be Katharine Hepburn. Not just her style and class (though for some reason this quiz said she nor I had any class at all. Bah. Ridiculous!), but also her wit, intelligence, and independence.

I’m amazed that she was able to live her life on her terms, never marrying (though privately — or not so privately — carrying on a long-term affair with the married but separated Spencer Tracy), and never — as far as I know — seen as a freak (or rumored to be lesbian, as is sadly the case today for any single woman over a certain age), nor ever even giving a damn whether she was seen as a freak by society. She was practical, witty, intelligent, classy, talented, independent, and beautiful. How can you beat that combination?

I wish that it were true that Katharine-with-an-a equals Lu-with-no-o, but I can only hope and pray that someday I on my best day will have even half of what Kate had on her worst.

Lord, be merciful and kind and let me be my own version of a Katharine Hepburn; leaving a spiritual legacy as powerful and dynamic as was Katherine’s film and cultural one.

You are the fabulously
quirky and independent woman of character. You go your own way, follow
your own drummer, take your own lead. You stand head and shoulders next
to your partner, but you are perfectly willing and able to stand alone.
Others might be more classically beautiful or conventionally
woman-like, but you possess a more fundamental common sense and
off-kilter charm, making interesting men fall at your feet. You can
pick them up or leave them there as you see fit. You share the screen
with the likes of Spencer Tracy and Cary Grant, thinking men who like
strong women.

Check it out and see which Classic Dame you are. But  be warned, OkCupid.com insists you sign up before it will give you your results (it’s free). Frustrating, but worth it if you’re into this crazy stuff.

  1. That was fun Lu. I didn’t mind the sign up, it was kind of fun too. šŸ™‚
You are one wise-cracking lady, always quick with a clever remark and easily able to keep up with the quips and puns that come along with the nutty situations you find yourself in. You’re usually able to talk your way out of any jam, and even if you can’t, you at least make it more interesting with your biting wit. You can match the smartest guy around line for line, and you’ve got an open mind that allows you to get what you want, even if you don’t recognize it at first. Your leading men include Cary Grant and Clark Gable, men who can keep up with you.

  2. Oh, balderdash. I’d much rather spend time with the real Lu-with-no-O than the Katharine Hepburn that everyone thinks they know. Does anyone know who she was behind all the mythology? Nope.
We all spend too much time trying to become something we’re not. It’s certainly a big battle for me, that God is gradually pulling me out of. It’s a guaranteed loss. I wish I were better at believing that God is on my side.

  3. Larry – this is why I love you! I’m all wanting to be someone else, and you’re all wanting to be my friend just because I’m ME — and reminding me in the process that God made me to be ME, just me, and no one else. You are a good friend!
Debbie — you got the same as Sista! How cool! I confess, I started to read your comment and thought, “wow! Debbie’s really giving me such great compliments. She read all that in my personality from my blog??” Until I realized you were actually writing the description of you. Doh!! I’m such a dork. šŸ™‚
Sista — definitely! I don’t know why I love these things, but I do. Thanks for this one!

  4. Well, all is not rosy in the me-as-me department; I’ve spent most of my life trying to be what others expect. Reasons are varied, most of them centered on self-defense. This is why I’m very good at short-term relationships but things go south after that initial fascination.
That works just fine until one meets Jesus. How do you force yourself to perform for the rest of your life? I can’t get away from the Holy Spirit. In some ways this is wonderful but over the last couple of years it has been an increasing burden. Trying to make God happy.
So, we’ve been walking the timeline backward. Before the beginning: I learned this stuff as a kid, and continued it after Jesus entered my life in October 1971. How many years does it take for God to get through to me the idea that hit me recently, as I thought about my dead-end life and lack of interest in continuing.
God said “I’d rather have a live backslider than a dead perfect Christian.” The actual statement was more subtle than that but won’t fit into words.
What kind of person am I suited to be? What kind of person are you suited to be? I don’t know. My guess is that some grow up farther from their center than others. I knew my center years ago but have driven myself away. Can you believe God is leading me back there? It’s pretty strange to me and I’m sort of used to strange things. Too good to be true but too essential to be false.

You scored 21% grit, 19% wit, 33% flair, and 38% class!
You are class itself, the calm, confident “perfect woman.” Men turn and look at you admiringly as you walk down the street, and even your rivals have a grudging respect for you. You always know the right thing to say, do and, of course, wear. You can take charge of a situation when things get out of hand, and you’re a great help to your partner even if they don’t immediately see or know it. You are one classy dame. Your screen partners include William Powell and Cary Grant, you little simmerpot, you.
Not sure how true it is, but it is a fun comparison!
