New Design & Content

I got bored today and thought I’d change the look of my blog. How do you like the two columns and the color scheme? It’s hard at times because Typepad’s color palette isn’t as wide as I’d prefer. I know I could move on up to something like Word Press, but I just don’t think I’m ready to do that much designing. Perhaps someday, though.

What ultimately necessitated the changes, though, were all the new fun widgets Typepad recently made so simple to add to one’s blog. Take a look around at the sidebars and you’ll see lots of new fun stuff. On the left side there’s things like my "43 Things/Places" lists and over to the right you’ll see a fun little "blog tattoo" with Kanji characters, as well as a OpinMind which feeds a steady list of quotes from this very blog for your enlightenment. Or amusement, which ever comes most.

My list of categories has also changed to a cool "cloud" that highlights the ones I use most.

And while I was at it, I changed a few other small things here and there. Take a look around and let me know what you think.

  1. One problem for me: the text in the right sidebar is invisible. White on white until I mouse over it, and then it turns yellow, which for my middle-aged eyes is nearly invisible. And I don’t understand the kanji thing, nor the opinmind… but I’m a fuddy-duddy. I come here for your thoughts, experiences and ideas. You could put them in an old cardboard box and I’d still read them. Yah, I know, Hollywood would never have anything on me.

  2. Larry I think you need to seriously adjust your monitor or perhaps get a new one. The color of the sidebar font is black and the rollover color is blue….
Anyone else having this problem with the sidebars?
PS — I love all things Japanese, so the Kanji is more for my entertainment than anything. šŸ™‚

  3. Yeppers. Macs rock.
And Larry knows that. HE’S the one who helped me buy my Powerbook. And he and my friend Cassie were the ones who convinced me that Macs do indeed rock. I just think his monitor’s gone wonky…

  4. My monitor is OK everywhere else. I’m using the 17″ Powerbook G4 I bought around the same time you got yours, Lu. Maybe it’s a Firefox issue. I’ll try it with Safari.

  5. Interesting. This page looks entirely different with Safari. The sidebar backgrounds are grey, with black text. In Firefox, the left sidebar is yellow, the right one white. Text on the right is white, with Safari it’s black. This is the first time I’ve noticed a major difference between browsers. I wonder what Typepad is doing with the HTML code to produce such great differences.

  6. Okay, that’s just plain weird. I use Firefox exclusively now (except on the now rare occasions when a website is only compatible with IE) — because Safari generally isn’t compatible with most websites — and it looks like I designed it, grey sides, black print, blah, blah… When I look at it at work on the PC’s IE it looks fine too.
That’s just plain weird. Why is it effecting your view on Firefox but not mine?? Weird.

  7. What’s even weirder is that I’m back, using Firefox now, and everything looks normal. Grey and black.
I’ve noticed that doing Blog entries with Firefox tends to cause some minor problems elsewhere that are cured by quitting the application and restarting. I quit Firefox to run Safari. Problem solved.
And it could be the problem is related to the computer sleeping. I haven’t restarted this thing in months. I just put it to sleep and then wake it up. We all know what I’m like when I first get up…
